Series “B” is the outcome of the
activity of the two services of the “Section d’Etat”, that is the Economic and
Agricultural Service and the Administrative Service. Records relating to the
“amines” (guild masters) of the agriculture were generated by the Economic and
Agricultural Service whereas those relating to the “amines” of the other trades
resulted from the Administrative Service’s activity.
These files contain widely varied records in both Arabic and French. We can
mention here candidacies for the function of the “amine”, nomination decrees of
“amines”, varied correspondences widely informative on the legal and
professional status of the “amines” in different professions and throughout the
different regions of the country under the French Protectorate.
These records are important in that they can serve as a source for the study of
the institution of the “amine” as a traditional one and its evolution under the
reign of the capitalist economic system (1881-1956).
It is unquestionably possible to undertake social studies on the “amines”
profession (social origin, fortune, relations between the profession members and
the political power…)
The volume of series “B” is about 49,2 linear metres of records classified
following the geographical criterion, and comprising all operating professions
within each district. The number of these professions and the amines differs
from region to region and from era to another. It is important to note here that
the major part of the preserved fonds available relates to the period 1881-1960
whereas the number of files dealing with the post- 1956 period is relatively a
very small one.
