It is attached to
the “Section d’Etat” fonds and concerns the diplomatic and consular affairs and
the Husseynite Family decorations in the period 1881-1956. The volume of these
records extends to about 16.6 linear metres (166 archives boxes). This series
consists of two parts :
1/ Records relating to the Husseynite Families from Ali Bey (1882-1902)
to Lamin Bey (1943-1957) and the “List Civile” i.e princes and princesses of the
reigning family. These records reveal a lot about their wealth management,
expenses, debts as well as matters directly affecting them or their agents and
personnel. Such records are instructive with regard to the relations
esetablished between the Husseynite Family, the colonial power and the
population.
2/ The second
part of this series sheds light on the diplomatic and consular affairs and
notably the protocols and the conventions concluded between the colonial power
and certain foreign countries or international bodies and France.
Other
files concern European consular officers in Tunisia, namely translators. Some of
these files deal with the situation of Tunisians living in certain Arab or
European countries in addition to some international important events and
happenings, exhibitions and fairs.
Finally, some other files relate to Tunisian or French decorations for the
benefit of marking figures or senior civil servants. The importance of the
records generated by the “Section d’Etat” first division is, thus, evident.
These records relate to the Family Regent during the period when diplomatic and
military mandates were transferred from the Bey to the French “Resident general”
in Tunisia.
