Records relating to the colonial
period are divided into two sub-groups
:
Sub-group of the “Section d’Etat”
(State Section) : it includes records generated by the Tunisian
administration in the period 1881-1956. These are grouped into seven series :
- Series A :
It deals with the local and regional administration, the frontiers, the local
and neighbouring population control and migrations… It follows a geographical
and thematic classification. The value of this fonds is due to the importance of
the records relating to the administrative organization and administrative staff
(caid, khalifa, kahia, cheikh…)
- Series B :
Records here were generated by both the Economic and Agricultural Service and
the Administrative Service. They deal with the role of The “Amines” of the
trades (tradeguilds). The geographical criterion plays a major role in their
classification.
- Series B1 :
It comprises records devoted to justice (generated by the “Section d’Etat”
and the Ministry of Justice). These are too much instructive about the personnel
forming the justice corps (Cadhi, Mufti…) as well as the “Charaa” justice.
- Series C :
It includes records relating to “habous or waqf” (landed property matters,
the habous administration in addition to files in direct connection with the
habous of the Holy Places : Mecca and Medina), to the landed property question
and to the assets of religious and benevolent institutions.
- Series D :
Documents here deal with the cult matters in Tunisia in the Colonial Period,
thus allowing access to information relating to religious institutions (Zaouia
and religious societies i.e brotherhoods such as Qadiria, Rahmania…), to Imams
and to some files which deal with Christianity and conversion into Islam.
- Series E :
Its numerous records (1550 archives boxes) deal with the different
activities generated by the administrative institutions and services in the
colonial era as well as their relations with the central political power.
- Series F :
It consists of two parts ; one relates to the Husseynite Family and the
other to the diplomatic and consular affairs
Sub-group of the Secretariat
General of the Tunisian Government
(Series SG) : it consists of the records
generated by the Secretariat General institution, founded in 1883, and to which
were attached the Services charged with the control of the native population
affairs, public security, the general inspection of administrative services,
personnel and civil administrations of the regency, the control of expenditure
as well as the legal and legislation service. The importance of this fonds (1675
archives boxes) lies in the diversity and variety of its record types :
legislative texts, brochures, petitions, administrative correspondences… |
