Records relating to the Ottoman
Period are divided into two sub-groups :
Sub-group of the Historical Series (3196 files)
dealing with The modern history of Tunisia (from the 16th to the 19th c). This
series comprises six sections :
- The Beylical family and senior civil servants.
- The state’s structures and the caid’s (1) correspondences with the
Bey and the Grand Vizir (Grand Vizier).
- Financial organisation.
- Judicial affairs (Charaique jurisdiction and jurisdictions created post to the
1861 Constitution.
- Military affairs, notably the Ministry of War and the Marines.
- Foreign relations (treaties and conventions, especially those concluded with
European countries during the 18 th and 19 th centuries

Fiscal and administrative registers sub-group : This sub-group (4065
registers) which covers the period 1672-1881 represents a rich source of
valuable information quite revealing about the economic life (registers relating
to the “Ouchour”, “Iana” and “Quanoun” tax system), the administrative life (the
“Maaroudhs”) and the political and social activity (studies dealing with certain
regions or tribes). These registers follow a thematic and numerical
classification. |
