Access to records available at the
National Archives takes place in conformity with the stipulations of Act n°
88-95, 2 August 1988 and Decree n° 88-1981, 13 December, 1988, and according to
the following provisions :
I – Access to the reading room :
1- Users are required to obtain reader’s cards allowing access to the
reading room. Such cards are delivered by the administration for only one year.
For irregular users, they are delivered a temporary authorization (15 days)
which could be extended only once and for one week.
2- Users can in no way be allowed the consulation of the available
records if they fail to comply with the access formalities.
3- To access the reading room, users should leave at the reception desk
their cards, bags, folders or others except personal papers, money, jewellery…
for whose loss the administration bears no responsibility.
4- Users are requested to sign in, both when entering and leaving.
II – Records consultation :
5- Frequently-used instruments and finding aids can be directly accessed
in the reading room. Once consulted, readers are kindly requested to return them
to their places.
6- The number of consultation requests is limited to six per work
session. Users are required to return the already consulted records before
applying for others.
7- The consultation of records takes place within the confines of the
reading room. Loan or the taking of records outside the National Archives is
formally prohibited. Users are held liable for the integrity of the consulted
records or files until their restitution to the reading room’s supervisor.
8- Users should display a great care in handling the consulted records
and should by no means annotate them or take notes below.
9- Users are kindly asked to notify to the reading room’s supervisor any
cases of torn or damaged records so as to free themselves of any liability and
help the staff take the necessary measures.
10- The original order of a file’s documents is to be respected. Users
are requested to signal to the reading room’s supervisor any ill-arranged files.
11- Once consulted, records have to be returned to the reading room’s
supervisor. It is possible, however, to apply for the re-consulting of the same
records for an extra period of no more than six days.
III – Records reproduction :
12- Users can apply for the reproduction of some records.
13- Requests for records photocopying should be addressed to the reading
room’s supervisor. Photocopying is authorized with regard to the medium’s state
of the targeted records. Tariffs are fixed, and fees should be paid in advance.
14- It is strictly forbidden to disrupt the internal order of a consulted
file by drawing a certain number of documents for photocopying ends.
IV – Other recommendations :
15- Silence is requested in the reading room.
16- Smoking is prohibited in the reading room, the finding aids space and
toilets. It is, nonetheless, permitted in specially reserved spaces.
